You have approached the fabulous age of 50 and joined the ranks of card-carrying American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) members, but have you figured out what to do with the card or is it just sitting in your wallet taking up space. You have already made the investment, now it is time to make sure you are taking full advantage of your AARP membership.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • AARP membership
Step1
Ask your various insurance companies whether or not they offer an AARP membership discount. This includes prescription, medical, auto, life, and homeowners. You can also change insurance companies in order to receive the discounts.
Step2
Switch from the American Automobile Association to the AARP Motoring Plan (See Tips) and save approximately $20 a year with comparable benefits.
Step3
Mention your AARP membership when you are renting a vehicle from most national car rental agencies to receive an additional discount.
Step4
Contact AARP when booking a vacation to receive discounts and packages through the AARP Passport program.
Step5
Attend AARP member events. These events are hosted all around the country at different times of year and are a good way to learn about issues facing individuals over the age of 50 as well as make new friends and spend a day out and about.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read the emails and newsletters that the AARP sends out on a regular basis to make sure you are staying on top of the best offers available to you.
