There is nothing yummier than the smell of sweets baking in the kitchen. Make spice scented hot pads to give your kitchen the fresh baked smell without all the work. With a few simple supplies and rudimentary sewing skills, you can have scented hot pads complete and your kitchen smelling sweet and spicy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two 7 inch squares of material
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Rice
  • Whole cloves
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Embroidery needle
  • Heat proof yarn or embroidery floss
  1. Step 1

Cut two seven inch by seven inch squares of material. Put the squares together with the right sides together.

  2. Step 2

Sew around all four edges of the square using a quarter inch seam allowance. Leave a two inch space open.

  3. Step 3

Turn the square right side out. Fill the square with two cups of rice, two ounces of whole cloves and two cinnamon sticks.

  4. Step 4

Fold the raw edges in and pin together. Stitch the opening closed with a sewing machine.

  5. Step 5

Use heat proof yarn or embroidery floss to blanket stitch around the outside edge of the hot pad. Make the stitch deep enough to cover the seam of the open spot. See the Resources below if you don't know how to blanket stitch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make hot pads from holiday print material and give them away as gifts.
  • Choose dark colored material that won't show stains.
  • Scented potpourri can be used in place of the cloves and cinnamon.
  • Washing the hot pads will ruin them and leave them scentless.
  • Use hot pads for protecting surfaces from heat only. Do not put hot pads directly on any heat source.
