The Pacific Ocean accounts for nearly half of the earth's water surface, and a third of the earth's entire surface area. Contrary to the ocean's name, which means "peaceful sea," the Pacific is a mass of tempestuous and unforgiving waters. In spite of this, and maybe because of it, crossing the Pacific by boat is the adventure of a lifetime. Follow these steps to cross the Pacific by boat.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Make a plan. You should spend at least as much time planning the crossing as you will spend actually doing the crossing. You need to plan the course, boat, crew, supplies, the time of year and emergency scenarios. Only once your plan is airtight can you begin to execute it.
Step2
Get your skills up to speed. Even if you plan to cross the Pacific in a power boat, or with a convoy or as a passenger traveling with an able crew, you need to get your marine and emergency skills in order. Knowing how to handle the boat, navigate and communicate with other vessels and authorities are not optional. Spend a few months filling the holes in your sailing knowledge bank.
Step3
Secure the right equipment. Crossing the Pacific requires an ocean-worthy vessel, not just a reliable bay sailboat or cruiser. Make sure the boat is in sound condition. Also, add self-generating power supplies, such as solar paneling, wind power generator and a water maker to the vessel so you're as self-reliant as possible. Also, make sure you have provisions to last you well in excess of your planned trip time.
Step4
Consider crossing with a convoy, rally or race. Annual races such as the Transpacific Yacht Race add a level of safety and competitiveness that will help you complete the race in one piece. Having other boats near by that can come to your rescue in an emergency situation provide peace of mind and a reliable safety net in case something goes wrong.
