How to Change the New Mail Notification Sound for Outlook

Many people use Microsoft Outlook to send email, schedule appointments and keep track of tasks. With all the other work you have to do on your computer, you may miss important emails. However, when you configure your Outlook email notification to make a sound, it will catch your attention. Follow these quick and simple steps to change the new message notification sound on the Microsoft Vista and XP operating systems.

Instructions

    Microsoft Vista

  1. Step 1

    Close Outlook. Click the "Start" button, select Control Panel and click Sound.

  2. Step 2

    Highlight "New Mail Notification." In the "Sound" dialog box, inside the Program box, scroll to "New Mail Notification" and highlight.

  3. Step 3

    Listen to .wav file options. Under the "Sounds" section, click the drop-down button to scroll through all wav files (*.wav) or click the "Browse" button to see other wav files. Each wav file contains a different sound. Select a wav file and click the "Test" button to hear the sound.

  4. Step 4

    Select your preferred sound file. Click "Apply" and then click "OK."

  5. Step 5

    Open Outlook to make your new Outlook email notification take effect.

  7. Step 1

    Close Outlook. Click the "Start" button, select "Control Panel" and click "Sounds and Audio Devices."

    Select the "Sounds" tab. In the "Program Events" box scroll to "New Mail Notification" and select.

    Find a .wav file. Under the "Sounds" dropdown, look at all .wav files (*.wav) or click the "Browse" button to see more .wav files. Click the arrow button to hear the sound of different .wav files until you find one you like.

  10. Step 4

    Finalize the change. After you have selected your favorite sound, click "Apply" and then click "OK." The dialog box will close. Restart the application to begin using your new Outlook email notification sound.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turn up your speaker volume when testing the different sounds for your email notification.
