Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Dress in layers. Wool and fleece are good choices. Wear an outside layer of clothing that protects you from the rain or snow. Remember to wear a hat and gloves. Wear insulated boots and wear two pairs of socks. It is better to bring more than you think you will need. You can always remove a layer of clothing if you need to.
Step2
Eat warm foods. A warm bowl of chili and hot soup are excellent choices. Bring a thermos full of hot drinks such as coffee and hot cider. It is important to stay hydrated in cold weather. Don't drink ice cold beverages too fast. Sipping them is less likely to make you feel cold.
Step3
Avoid too much alcohol. It may make you feel warmer as you drink it, however it does not raise your body temperature and actually can cool off the body and contribute to hypothermia.
Step4
Move around. Moving around gets your blood circulating and helps raise your body temperature. Bring a football to toss around. Dance to some music or lead a few cheers for your team. Walk around and visit with other tailgaters. Avoid sitting in one spot for too long, which will make you feel colder.
Step5
Use a charcoal grill. The grill will give off heat and you can huddle around it as you cook some hotdogs and hamburgers. Another option to help stay warm at a tailgate party is a small outdoor fire pit.
Step6
Put up a canopy. Bring a water resistant plastic canopy or tarp that can block out wind and protect you from rain and snow. There are a variety of canopies that are compact and easy to put up and take down.
Step7
Bring a blanket. When you are sitting around having some food and visiting with friends wrap a blanket around you to help keep body heat in.
