1
Understand the basic premise of the throwing star. It is pointed all around which guarantees a thrown star will pierce the intended target. The idea is to hit the target and not be concerned about revolutions of the weapon as with other throwing weapons such as axes and tomahawks.
-
2
Hold the throwing star horizontal to the palm with the thumb placed against the center hole. Multiple throwing stars should be stacked in the opposite hand and slid off one by one in rapid succession. Using the weight of the body in tandem with the throwing arm adds power to the throw. With practice, the thrower's body and throwing arm work in unison.

3
Start to get a feel for the weapon by tossing it casually at a wooden or polystyrene target. Stand within three feet of the target and make several dozen tosses before stepping back another foot.
-
4
Focus on the moment of release. The blade should slip effortlessly from the fingertips. Grip the blade firmly but with flexibility before throwing. When the blade slips away correctly its trajectory will be true and accurate.
-
5
Move the throwing arm across the midsection and do not fling the stars, rather aim and fire repeatedly. The biggest beginner's mistake is to stand flat footed when practicing. Throwing stars are not bullets; they are meant to be used in motion, not from a rigid position.

ok the shuriken was not intended to strike anyone, it was assumed to be more of a distraction tool or a ploy to draw attention to another area while sneaking by unseen. Ninjas weren't about all out brawls but avoiding them and completing their objective. Much like modern day assassins.
