You've been helping your friends with school work for years. You love helping people and you're good in school. Now you want to tutor for money. You can take the knowledge you have and start a tutoring business by following these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Check with your local school and literacy organization to see who needs tutoring. You won't get names but you will get an idea of the age group or area where people need help the most.

  2. Step 2

Prepare a contract or agreement that you and your clients can sign. Outline both your expectations including payment, price and schedule.

  3. Step 3

Create a business plan. Plan where you will tutor, who you will tutor and what you will tutor.

  4. Step 4

Get your name out there. Make advertisements and tape them to mailboxes. Put them up on public bulletin boards.

  5. Step 5

Tell your friends and parents of kids you know. Make business cards and pass them out to people you know.

  6. Step 6

Check online tutoring groups for more information on tutoring. You can find resources, chat groups and ideas.

  7. Step 7

Buy fun materials for students to use like colored markers, pens, papers and flash cards. Set up a place in your home to tutor. Buy teaching resources like a computer, workbooks and text books.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient. It takes time to get your name around but when you do, you could have plenty of business.
  • Watch out for your own safety and the safety of the children you tutor. Parents may be more comfortable if you tutor their children in their own home.
