Step 1
Determine how many 4-H members are interested in home arts. This category can include food arts, home decorating and clothing, just to name a few. Narrow the topic to an area you are comfortable teaching as well as one that 4-H members are eager to learn.
-
Step 2
Enroll students in the project at the general 4-H orientation meeting.
-
Step 3
Visit the local 4-H extension office for materials for the class you plan to teach. Also, obtain any forms you and your students may need.
-
Step 4
Research home arts projects online. You can find more recent topics there than in 4-H publications.
-
Step 5
Let each member decide what project she's going to complete. Typically, younger 4-H members complete three simple projects while older members opt for one larger project.
-
Step 6
Hold regular project meetings. Don't wait until a week before the local fair to help members prepare their projects.
-
Step 7
Encourage each home arts member to present at least one project demonstration to the entire club. In addition to building organization skills, this is a good opportunity for the 4-H'er to learn public speaking.
-
Step 8
Help students prepare their home arts projects for the local fair. After the fair, help them evaluate the judging process. Remember to help your 4-H members with completion of their end-of-year forms.
