Dress for the occasion when searching for diamonds in a public mine. You will need to be wearing clothes that you don't care will get dirty, since you will be digging in dirt and perhaps mud. You might even consider wearing waders as one of the more successful diamond searchers has done.

2
Walk up and down the rows that have been made by previous diggers. With rain and wind, the soil is always changing. You might find something during this preliminary search.

Buy, rent, or bring your supplies with you for searching for diamonds in a public mine. You'll need a small screen or a seruca (a box with a screen as its bottom used for sifting dirt), a bucket in which to sift the dirt and a shovel. Having a surface on which to work, like a folding table, could also be helpful.

4
Dig down below the surface 6 inches with the shovel, and sift the soil with your screen and seruca. This mining method requires a little more work but could potentially be more productive than the searching the surface.

5
Make deeper holes in places where tiny gravel, different from the other dirt, is evident. This tiny gravel is what remains of the professional mining done in the 20s and 30s. You will have to wash the soil using different screens (with larger and smaller holes), and hand-sort what remains. Experienced diamond searchers in public mines use this method to find diamonds and other precious stones.
