There are many hazards on the western coast of the US to watch and plan for, including tsunamis which can possibly be deadly. Knowing what to do in the event of a tsunami can save your property and your life.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Understand the warning signs of tsunamis which are waves, commonly called tidal waves, that travel up to 200 mph and 1000 feet high, generally caused by hurricane conditions, an earthquake or even the perfect alignment of the sun and moon causing gravitational pull to make huge waves. Landslides, volcanic eruptions and even a meteorite crashing to the earth can cause a tsunami.
Step2
Know the forewarning terms that the media broadcast and what action they will require from you to survive a tsunami. An advisory means that an event such as an earthquake has occurred that may eventually cause a tsunami. Watches indicate that waves were spotted but are more than 2 hours from your area. Warnings mean dangerous sized waves were spotted and immediate action is required for you to survive the tsunami.
Step3
Evacuate as quickly as possible moving inland and to the highest ground possible. Turn off water, electricity and gas before you leave your home. Do not try to save any possessions because the waves can come quickly. Even if one wave has passed, going back to your home for things can be fatal because the second wave to come is usually bigger and stronger than the first, and you may not survive.
Step4
Watch the beach and shorelines for a noticeable decline in the water level if you are outdoors without a radio or television. If you see the sea level decrease quickly, this is a warning that a tsunami is about to hit. Leave immediately to survive the impact of the tsunami.
Step5
Wait for authorities to say it's alright to return to your home. After you return, check for gas leaks and broken electrical wires before letting your family enter. Check all food and water for contamination before consuming anything and stay away from any debris floating in the floodwater to survive the tsunami's aftermath.
