How to Dress for Wakeskating

Wakeskating is all about finesse and style. The board is something you ride with, not on. Look as good on the water as your tricks do in the air by showing up at the beach in smooth wakeskater style.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Boardshorts make or break the style. No self-respecting wakeskater would show up in short swim trunks. Go for that longer, somewhat baggy appearance. Look for a neoprene fly which won't snag on body hair like velcro. Seamless or melted inseam stitching will go a long way to avoid scratching the skin all around. Boardshorts should be quick drying, durable for spills, lightweight and comfortable. And, of course, in totally sick patterns and colors.

  2. Step 2

Get wakeshoes. Look for self-draining, quick drying wakeshoes with a sticky rubber outside and a soft cushioned sole.

  3. Step 3

Wear sunglasses. Keep the sunlight and spray out of your eyes. There are many cool brands of glasses designed specifically with extreme water sports in mind. Ventilated draining eyewear keeps the lenses clear and unclouded. Adjustable straps keeps them secure during spills. You can even order them with prescription lenses. Always go for 100% UVA and UVB protection.

Tips & Warnings
  • Women's boardshorts can range in length and tightness without cancelling out the coolness factor.
  • Most boardshorts come with a versatile flat little tool that fits in the cargo pocket. A comb wax scraper, waxcomb, and key wrench for fine grub screws. A few can be found with a bottle opener as well.
  • Wind and sun exposure cause pterygium, a fleshy growth that attacks the white part of the eye and must be removed with surgery. Wearing sunglasses greatly reduces the risk of pterygium and cataracts.
