How to Make a Buzz Lightyear Costume

Save

"To infinity and beyond!" is the classic catch phrase of everyone's beloved Pixar hero, Buzz Lightyear. In Disney's "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" Buzz saved the day and won our hearts. Follow the steps below to soar as a superhero at your next costume party with a homemade Buzz Lightyear costume made with things from around the house.

Things You'll Need

  • White shirt, pants and sneakers
  • Cardboard
  • Colorful paints
  • Stapler
  • Duct tape
  • Wear white pants or sweats and a white long sleeved shirt. Consider starching the pants to make them stiff and robotic. Wear white sneakers.

  • Make the wings. The wings are the signature piece of the Buzz Lightyear costume. Cut one long strip of cardboard in a size appropriate to your body frame. Paint the bottom half of the wings purple and the top half with alternating red and white vertical stripes. Fold a crease in the center of the strip. Staple the cardboard at the crease to the white shirt in the location between the shoulder blades.

  • Create the chest plate. Cut two pieces of cardboard: one wide enough to cover the top of your chest and one wide enough to span your upper back. Out of the top center of each piece of cardboard carve a half circle wide enough for your neck. Tape the pieces together with duct tape.

  • Paint the cardboard pieces green. Beneath the neck hole of the front piece, paint a blue rectangle around an outstretched pair of white wings. On the right shoulder, paint three oval buttons: one blue, one yellow and one red. On the left shoulder paint a red circle.

  • Slip the cardboard chest plate over your head. Your homemade Buzz Lightyear costume is now complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear a purple hooded sweatshirt under the white shirt, put on the hood and then slide the cardboard chest plate over the hood.
