Strength training is only a small step towards winning a bodybuilding competition. To win a bodybuilding competition, you must consider all of the competition's elements. With knowledge of what you need to win and with dedication to training, you'll have a good chance of winning a competition.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with a solid bodybuilding background. You should already have a couple years of strength training behind you if you want to win a bodybuilding competition. You also need good genetics to achieve the ideal form that most competitions seek.

  2. Step 2

Choose the competition you want to enter and find out who runs it. Different organizations have different standards by which they judge competitors, and they also have different mandatory poses.

  3. Step 3

Learn the mandatory poses for your bodybuilding competition. Practice the poses as soon as you decide to enter the competition, and keep perfecting them until the competition date. Confidence in the poses helps you have good stage presence.

  4. Step 4

Evaluate your condition using video or photography. Strike the mandatory poses for the camera and analyze them with another bodybuilder or a personal trainer. Note which areas need work and which areas are in good shape. Use this information to plan your physical training.

  5. Step 5

Plan your strength and cardio training and stick to it. Your goal is to get down to the lowest fat percentage possible while having the best and most symmetrical muscle definition. Use supersets in your strength training and incorporate cardio into your regular routine to keep your fat percentage down.

  6. Step 6

Begin your training diet 16 weeks before the bodybuilding competition date. During this time, focus on eating plenty of vegetables and lean protein. Keep your carbohydrate intake down to a minimum, especially as the competition date approaches. Drink as much water as you can.

  7. Step 7

Create your own choreography for the freestyle element of the competition. Your routine should match the music you choose and should show off your assets while minimizing any deficiencies. Practice your choreography until your body memorizes it.

  8. Step 8

Sip on water 24 hours before the bodybuilding competition instead of drinking your regular amount. Doing this creates the best muscular definition for the show and helps you achieve a paper-thin look to your skin that shows off your muscles best.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a professional tan before competing. Amateur or self-applied tans are easy to spot and may reduce your credibility.
