How to Identify Moose Tracks

Moose are a grand beautiful animals, but they can be dangerous when provoked. Use these steps to learn how to identify moose tracks in the forest so you can glimpse them in their natural habitat or track them at a safe distance.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Notice the sheer size of tracks, as opposed to standard deer tracks. The main part of the track or print is about 6-1/2 inches long.

  2. Step 2

    See the heart shape that is formed by the 2 tracks next to or near each other. The sharp pointed end of the shape points in the direction they are traveling.

  3. Step 3

    Note that cows and young bulls have pointier tracks than adult bulls or deer.

  4. Step 4

    Measure the stride of the tracks, which should measure 30" to 40" long if is a moose.

  5. Step 5

    Recognize that each track, or footprint, has 2 large hoofed toes and 2 smaller toes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Moose are highly adaptive to the cold climate and with their long legs they can walk through snow up to 26" deep. Take precautions when tracking for moose to not get yourself in deeper than you can get out of.
  • Always wear the proper safety gear when hunting to alert yourself to other hunters.
  • Always hunt and hike with another person in the event that you get injured or lost.
