How to Change an iTunes Music Player Default

This article gives instructions how to make Apple iTunes or other music player the default player on Windows XP or Windows Vista. Default player means that when you insert a music CD in your Windows XP or Vista desktop or laptop computer, your preferred music player program will open and begin playing the music CD.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Basic Windows XP or Vista knowledge.
  • Installed Apple iTunes.

Step1
Windows XP: At the Desktop, open the Start menu and select Set Program Access and Defaults.
Windows Vista:At the Desktop, open the Start menu and select Default Programs.
Step2
Windows XP: At the Add or Remove Programs window, select Non-Microsoft.
Windows Vista: At the Default Programs window, select Set your default programs.
Step3
Windows XP: Find Media Player on the list and then select iTunes from the drop-down list. Click OK. You're finished!
Windows Vista: Select iTunes and then select Set this program as default. Click OK. You're finished!

Tips & Warnings

  • You can change the default programs for Web browser, email program and instant messenger by following steps 1 - 2 for Windows XP and Windows Vista.
