How to Write a Commercial Jingle

A commercial jingle consists of catchy music with lyrics and is used by companies to market their products. Jingles run for approximately 30 seconds on radios and television. Some jingles are so memorable that consumers remember the tune and words for years. Here are some tips for writing one.

        Select the business for which you want to write the jingle. Get a creative brief from the clients learn the objective of the product, the mood and tone of the commercial, the concept behind the slogan and the target audience. Find out what style of music they prefer.

        Brainstorm to get a range of ideas. Consider commercials for similar products or theme and analyze their style. This provides you inside information on what reaches the consumers and also what to avoid.

        Make outlines for different illustrations and consult with your client about the approach. This lets the client know the direction in which the jingle is going.

        Choose the concepts that the client prefers and refine the illustrations. Imagine situations and characters based on the mood and theme chosen.

        Open the jingle with a strong hook and an appropriate tone to get the consumer's attention. The body copy should provoke the consumer's curiosity, make them smile and think about the product. Add an appropriate slogan at the end.

        Rewrite the jingle by practicing it along with the music so it fits into the time slot. Record the jingle using singers and voice-over professionals to assess the final version before playing it to the clients.

    • Draft at least ten different concepts to make sure you cover all angles. Always have backup lyrics and save music that you initially discarded. They can be used to inspire new ideas.
