Help a Teen Ace a Driving Test

When teens are ready to drive, it can be hard for parents to share their enthusiasm. Partly because we know the dangers that exist for drivers, but it's also another sign that our babies are growing up. You can't keep your kids young forever, but you can help ensure they become safe drivers. When a teen aces their driving test, it boosts their self esteem, and helping them do that will bring you peace of mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Check with your state's department of motor vehicles and get the criteria for the driving test. Knowing what's required will help your teen be better prepared when taking the test.

    • 2

Talk to other kids and their parents who have already taken the test. Find out not only what they did right but what they did wrong so that you don't make the same mistakes.

    • 3

Have your teen take an on-line driver's education course. Even if they take a class at school or with a private company, the additional education will be helpful. Since it's done in the comfort of your own home anytime of day, it's easy to work into a busy schedule.

    • 4

Quiz your teens whenever possible about driving regulations and traffic signs. If you observe another driver doing something wrong or see road signs with images but no words, ask your teens about them. This continual testing will help re-enforce what they need to know to become safe drivers.

    • 5

Practice, practice, practice. The more hours a teen has behind the wheel, the more confident she will be with her skills. Taking the actual driving test can be nerve racking but the better prepared she are, the less nervous she will be.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice driving with your teen as much as you have to until you are both comfortable with his skills behind the wheel. If your child senses you don't think he can do it, he will lack the self confidence he needs to pass the test.
