How to Live Happily Childless

For some individuals, living childless is the result of infertility or a failed adoption. Other people decide not to have children for a variety of reasons. Deciding not to become a parent is an individual choice. Raising children can be fulfilling, but for some, living childless and happy can go hand and hand.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Accept your decision. If you have decided to stop fertility treatments or pursuing parenthood, take the time to come to terms with your choice. Make a list of the reason why this is the best choice for you. Trust your instincts if you start to second guess yourself.
Step2
Stop worrying what other people think. Do not feel pressured to have children by family, friends or society. Raising children is one of the biggest commitments and responsibilities you can take on. Having a child to please other people is not a good reason to become a parent.
Step3
Nurture the relationships you have. Spend time with a spouse or significant other. Have a night set aside to visit with friends. Keep in touch with people who do not live nearby through phone calls and email. Let the people you care about know how you feel.
Step4
Spend time with other people's kids. People who do not have children do not dislike kids, they may just not want to have their own. If you like kids, spend time with nieces, nephews or your friends' children. Consider volunteering to be a mentor or teach children to read.
Step5
Pursue your own interests. Childcare is time consuming. Remaining childless will allow you more time to spend on hobbies, volunteer work and activities you enjoy.
Step6
Join a social group for adults without children. Groups such as Nokidding are for singles and married couples who are happy being childless. They provide friendship and activities with other adults who choose to not raise children.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't feel you have to defend your choice to remain childless.
  • Don't worry about who will take care of you when you are elderly. Having children does not guarantee you will have help.

on 3/13/2008 Think about this: It is IMPOSSIBLE that every single human being on this planet is fit for parenthood. In fact, my common sense tells me that only about 20% of the world's population (or less) are mentally/emotionally able to raise a child in the "correct" manner.
