Things You'll Need:

Set Up a New Account to Check Email on the iPhone

  1. Step 1

Touch the "Mail" option on the iPhone. The button has a picture of an envelope.

  2. Step 2

Select the type of email account you want to add. Names of several service providers are listed. Refer to your user manual to see who currently provides email services to the iPhone.

  3. Step 3

Fill out the account information blanks. This includes your name, the email address you have chosen and a password that you have created.

  4. Step 4

Enter the server type if you are prompted for this information. If you are unsure about what server your service provider uses, contact the provider for assistance.

  5. Check and Read Your Email on the iPhone

  6. Step 1

Go into the email function of the iPhone by tapping the word "Mail." When you have new email messages, the number of unread messages will appear at the corner of the "Mail" button.

  7. Step 2

Touch a specific mailbox folder to see the messages inside. There is a small blue circle next to any email that is unread.

  8. Step 3

Use your finger to tap each individual email message in order to read it. Once inside a message, you'll find up and down arrow buttons that you can use to scroll within the message itself.

  9. Step 4

Delete email by tapping it open. Tap on the trash can icon immediately after opening each message. An alternate way of deleting is to swipe your finger over the message without opening it, and then hit the "Delete" button that appears.

  10. Step 5

Check for new incoming email by touching the "Refresh" button. This button looks like a semicircle with an arrow head at the top.

  11. Step 6

Open email attachments by downloading them to the iPhone. A tap downloads the attachment, and then it will open as long as it is in an approved format. The iPhone supports many different file types, but not all.

  12. Step 7

Move email between folders to better organize your inbox. Open the specified email, tap the folder icon and select the mailbox where you want to store the message.

Tips & Warnings
  • Email settings that you alter while using the iPhone stay on the iPhone. They do not sync back to your computer. If you want to use the same email settings while on your computer, be sure to change them at that location.
