How to Convert a DVD to the iPhone

Though the iPhone can accept many different file formats, some video formats are not compatible with the device. For example, you may want to watch a DVD on your iPhone that you have made with iMovie (especially if you want to show your home movies to friends or relatives). Using iTunes, you can easily convert your DVD to an accepted format, and then add it to your iPhone.

Things You'll Need

  • ITunes
  • DVD to be converted
  • USB cable
  • IPhone
  • IPhone dock
  • Turn on your computer and open the iTunes application.

  • Upload the DVD to your iTunes music library. iTunes may automatically ask you if you want to add it. Click on "Yes" if this is the case.

  • Attach the ends of a USB cable to your iPhone and computer. Remember to use one of the computer's ports and not the keyboard port.

  • Place the iPhone in the dock in order to begin syncing.

  • Try to sync the DVD directly to your iPhone by following the syncing instructions on your computer screen. It may transfer without you needing to convert it.

  • Convert a DVD or other video that is in a non-readable format by using the iTunes program. You will see a message saying the specified video cannot play on iPhone.

  • Click on the item to be converted in your iTunes library, in order to highlight it.

  • Go to "Advanced" from the main menu bar in iTunes.

  • Choose the option labeled "Convert Selection for iPod."

  • Wait for the conversion process to take place. You will received a message when it is finished. The converted file can be found in its new format in your iTunes library.

  • Re-sync your computer and iPhone. The converted DVD should now transfer to your iPhone without a problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have converted a DVD to a format that you can transfer to your iPhone, keep the converted file on your computer. You may find that you eventually need to delete the file from your iPhone when you need more space. Should you later decide to re-load it to the iPhone, it will already be converted.
  • Trying to convert a DVD that has been released by a studio for commercial purposes may infringe upon its copyright. Many DVDs are embedded with software that will not allow them to be copied. Be aware of copyright laws before converting DVDs to your iPhone.
