Step 1
Apply minimal pressure while brushing your teeth to avoid stripping away the gum tissues. Use an electric toothbrush that has a sensor to check on the pressure you exert while brushing.
-
Step 2
Use a soft bristle toothbrush holding it at a 45-degree angle while brushing. Brush vertically and away from the gums to protect the gums instead of moving the brush horizontally across the teeth.
-
Step 3
Floss at least once a day before brushing your teeth. Flossing stops the accumulation of plaque, which is a breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria release toxins that erode the gum lines and expose the nerves.
-
Step 4
See an orthodontist if there is improper occlusion in your tooth alignment. When the teeth are crooked or if the filling is not done properly, the upper and lower teeth don't align properly. This exerts force on the gums and bone causing them to recede.

Step 5
Chew on crunchy foods like apples and carrots that gently remove plaque. They also increase the secretion of saliva that helps to wash down the bacteria that causes gums to recede.
