Gums protect the roots of your teeth but they can recede due to gum disease and poor oral hygiene. Since the gums adjust well initially to oral treatments, it is hard to identify receding gums until there is sensitivity. Receding gums not only cause dental concerns but they also make the teeth look elongated which destroys your smile.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Apply minimal pressure while brushing your teeth to avoid stripping away the gum tissues. Use an electric toothbrush that has a sensor to check on the pressure you exert while brushing.

  2. Step 2

Use a soft bristle toothbrush holding it at a 45-degree angle while brushing. Brush vertically and away from the gums to protect the gums instead of moving the brush horizontally across the teeth.

  3. Step 3

Floss at least once a day before brushing your teeth. Flossing stops the accumulation of plaque, which is a breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria release toxins that erode the gum lines and expose the nerves.

  4. Step 4

See an orthodontist if there is improper occlusion in your tooth alignment. When the teeth are crooked or if the filling is not done properly, the upper and lower teeth don't align properly. This exerts force on the gums and bone causing them to recede.

  5. Step 5

Chew on crunchy foods like apples and carrots that gently remove plaque. They also increase the secretion of saliva that helps to wash down the bacteria that causes gums to recede.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spend at least 2 minutes while brushing concentrating on the direction and force you apply on your teeth.
  • Change your toothbrush every 3 months and make regular dental appointments to prevent gum disease.
  • Don't grind or clench you teeth, as the unnecessary pressure causes gums to recede.
  • Avoid sticky foods and sugary drinks. Rinse your mouth after drinking soda.
