Ghillie camouflage suits can be expensive if bought from a retailer due to the labor. Making a ghillie suit, though time-consuming, is well worth the effort if done correctly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mechanic suit
  • Shoe Goo (available at Wal-Mart)
  • Old clothing, jute and burlap
  • Netting (fishing net or a volleyball net will work fine)
  • Scissors
  • Spray paint
  1. Step 1

Find a mechanic suit. This will be the base for the ghillie suit.

  2. Step 2

Locate some old clothing, jute and burlap. Cut the jute, old clothes and burlap into strips of varying lengths. Make sure none of the strips are shorter than twenty-four inches long. The strips should be from anywhere between 30 to 36 inches long.

  3. Step 3

Place the mechanic suit front-side down. Put the netting over the suit and cut out the shape of the mechanic suit.

  4. Step 4

Deposit a small amount of Shoe Goo on the perimeter of the mechanic suit and glue down the netting.

  5. Step 5

Take the old clothing, burlap and jute strips and tie the middle of the strips to the netting. Continue tying the strips until the suit is of the desired thickness.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spray paint the old clothing, jute and burlap strips so they match the environment.
  • Unravel the jute and tatter the burlap and old clothing, as this will give the ghillie suit a natural look.
  • Put a flame retardant on the completed suit, as ghillie suits are known to catch fire easily.
  • Drink plenty of water when wearing the ghillie suit, as it gets extremely hot and death can result from dehydration.
  • Always spray paint in a well-ventilated area.
  • Exercise caution when using scissors.

on 3/27/2008 the reason for NOT SPRAY PAINTING is that almost everything can smell the paint and its harder to cover than typical "HUMAN" odors.
