How to Display a File's Complete Path in Windows

Windows does not display a file's complete path by default, even though it can be useful to know where a file is located while you're looking at it. Several methods of telling Windows to display a file's complete path are described in the following steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

1. Click on the "Start" button in the lower left-hand corner of the desktop screen. Select the "Settings" category, if needed, and click on "Control Panel." Double-click on "Folder Options." This method will apply changes you want make to your entire system.
2. Use Windows Explorer to display the particular folder that interests you. Select the "Tools" menu item and click on "Folder Options …"
3. Select the "View" tab and check one or both of these boxes: "Display the full path in the address bar" and "Display the full path in the title bar."
4. Choose the "Apply to All Folders" button to display the complete file in all folders. Your setting changes will apply to your entire system if you accessed the "Folder Options …" screen through the Control Panel. Use the "Reset All Folders" button to reset the folder options of your entire system to their original system settings.
5. Utilize the "Restore Defaults" button to reset the folder options to their original system settings. Click on the "Apply" button to make the changes or click on "OK" to apply the changes and make the "Folder Options …" screen disappear.
