Google Talk is an instant communications service from Google. The downloadable Google Talk client offers instant messaging, voice calls, file transfers and email notifications from your Gmail account. Here is how you can utilize the Google Talk client.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download and install the Google Talk client from talk.google.com. Click the download link, select where you want to download the file to and run the file to launch the program.

  2. Step 2

Login with your Gmail username and password. If you don't have a Gmail account, you can register free at Gmail.com. You also can sign up for a Google Account on the Google Talk homepage. If you use a Gmail account, your contacts from Gmail will automatically be loaded into Google Talk.

  3. Step 3

Adjust the settings of your preference. Click on the "Settings" link at the top of the client to open the settings window. You can choose to have Google Talk start automatically when you start Windows, open Gmail when you click on email links, block contacts and more.

  4. Step 4

Invite your friends to Google Talk by clicking the "Invite" button that appears beside their name in your contacts list. You can also click the "Add" button at the bottom of the page to add friends to your Google Talk account.

  5. Step 5

Click on a contact's name to open a chat window with that contact. You can type into the box at the bottom of the window, press "Enter" when you're done and the text will appear in the chat window.

  6. Step 6

Right click on a contact to call them, send them a file or leave them a voice message. You can also view chat history, rename a contact or remove a contact by right-clicking their name.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can enter emoticons and they will be animated in Google Talk.
  • Check out the Google Talk Gadget for your blog or website, and check out the available Google Talk mobile applications.
