How to Become a Six Sigma Green Belt
Six Sigma is a quality improvement approach that seeks to eliminate variation. In simplified terms, a company completes a Six Sigma project by collecting data about processes and then implementing changes to reduce the amount of variation in them. Green belt certification is the lowest level of certification for management staff. Follow these steps to get this certification that will improve your company and advance your career.

1
Get the support of your company to pursue green belt certification. You need their support because most programs require you to complete a project as the true test for your certification. Even if it is not required, a certification won't be useful to you if your company is not interested in Six Sigma.
-
2
Find a program that meets your needs. Green belt certification programs are offered by business schools, quality consultants and some corporations. They vary from five day programs to college style courses. Some programs are offered online.

3
Sign up for the program. Discuss the details with your manager and human resources department to ensure that the company will pay your expenses.
-
4
Take the course and study for the examination. Once you pass the test most programs acknowledge your achievement to date, but require you to complete a project before getting your green belt.
-
5
Plan your Six Sigma project. Work with your managers and co-workers to identify an improvement project that you can regularly work on until completion.
-
6
Complete your improvement project using the principles you learned in your class. Some certification programs offer periodic assistance from the trainers. They can help you bring your project to completion. Also use fellow employees who have completed Six Sigma training as a resource. They can provide advice and assistance with particular knowledge of your company.
