In our fast food society something must be done to turn the tides of access and waste. Fortunately, you can make a difference by becoming more aware of what you buy. Purchasing environmentally safe products is an easy way to protect and heal our fragile ecosystem.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs. Such bulbs use 75 percent less energy and last 8 to 10 times longer.

  2. Step 2

Try organic foods. This decreases the amount of pesticides and herbicides put into our environment and on your foods. You can find many organic products in most grocery stores.

  3. Step 3

Shop at your local farmers market. This decreases the amount of energy used to transport food across the world. In addition, the produce will be fresher, taste better, cost less, and support local farmers.

  4. Step 4

Drink shade grown coffee. Most coffee is grown after cutting down rain forests. Shade grown keeps rain forests intact while growing the coffee underneath the forest.

  5. Step 5

Buy safe green cleaning products instead of environmentally toxic ones with ammonia and chlorine bleach. Examples include products by Vermont Soapworks, Aubrey Organics, Dr. Bronner's and Seventh Generation.

  6. Step 6

Purchase environmentally safe plastics. Use plastic that is both recyclable and won't leach toxic chemicals.
