Non-traditional funerals offer an opportunity to celebrate the life of a unique personality. There are no rules for a non-traditional service. What is important is that the funeral be reflective of the deceased, and relevant to the mourners.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Consider the wishes of the deceased. Incorporate as many previously stated requests of the decedent as possible such as flowers, food or music.
Step2
Establish a budget.
Step3
Select a venue such as a beach, park or favorite locale of the deceased.
Step4
Collect special objects such a photos, artwork or a favorite collection to display at the service that celebrates the life of the deceased.
Step5
Choose an officiant for the service. The officiant can be a mentor, spiritual leader, shaman or even an articulate friend or family member.
Step6
Work with your officiant to establish important ceremony elements such as special music, poetry, readings or rites.
Step7
Order items needed for the service such as chairs, flowers, food or audio/visual equipment.
Step8
Announce the date, time and venue of the funeral via phone, email, word of mouth and the local newspaper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be prepared to make your own photo collages, guest books, funeral cards and programs. Without the assistance of a funeral home, you will need to supply these items yourself.
  • Be aware of any local laws governing funerals in non-traditional settings.
