Each season brings a different set of factors that affect your facial skin, and winter is one of the most challenging. A winter face care routine helps prevent lines and wrinkles as you age and works for both men and women.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Oil-based moisturizer
  • Exfoliating mixture (commercial or homemade)
  • Sunscreen
  • Gentle facial cleanser or soap
  1. Step 1

Introduce the winter skin routine with the season transition. As the winter approaches and indoor heating goes on, start a winter face care routine. If possible, get a professional facial, even if you only get it once a year.

  2. Step 2

Hydrate the inside of your body. Summer is not the only time your body needs water. Indoor heat and the cold outside sap moisture from your body. Drink plenty of water and limit liquids that dehydrate such as caffeine and alcohol.

  3. Step 3

Switch your moisturizer if you currently use a water-based one. Winter is the time for an oil-based moisturizer; use it at least twice a day if you are outside.

  4. Step 4

Exfoliate. As the skin on the face dries, which happens more in winter, the dead skin cells multiply on the surface. There are a number of products that exfoliate, or you can make your own with simple products found in the kitchen such as oatmeal.

  5. Step 5

Remember sunscreen, even in winter and especially for outdoor winter sports. The glare of the sun off snow can affect your skin nearly as much as summer sun.

  6. Step 6

Clean your skin thoroughly. Remove all makeup, and wash and moisturize your skin before going to bed every night. The cleanser or soap for winter skin care should be oil-based or as gentle as possible, so it works with your moisturizer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Skin care products do not have to be expensive. Many models use homemade mixtures and other ordinary items.
  • Red patches or chapping are signs you are not getting enough moisture on the skin or inside your body.
  • Take care of the skin on your lips as well. Protect it during the day with a lip balm or lipstick, and coat it with lip balm or petroleum jelly in the evening.
  • Encourage your teen to start a winter skin care regimen.
