Riding a bike in the snow can be a difficult but adventuresome activity. The first battle to conquer for a winter bike ride is dressing appropriately. Wearing too much clothing will result in sweating and the chills, while too little clothing will result in the inability to raise your body temperature. Choose the right amount of clothing and brave the snow and ice with confidence.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bicycle helmet
  • Thin cap
  • Moisture-wicking clothing
  • Fleece sweater
  • Windproof jacket or vest
  • Gloves
  • Fleece-lined tights
  • Wool socks
  • Booties
  • Bicycle shoes
  • Glasses or goggles
  1. Step 1

Wear a thin cap under your helmet to keep your head warm. Choose a balaclava to protect your face when the wind is fierce.

  2. Step 2

Wear goggles or glasses that are well ventilated or have anti-fog properties.

  3. Step 3

Wear a moisture wicking layer on your torso. Follow the moisture-wicking layer with fleece followed by a windproof jacket or vest.

  4. Step 4

Choose gloves that have a moisture-wicking liner for your hands. Wear mittens or lobster gloves for the best warmth on your fingers.

  5. Step 5

Wear shoes that fit loose enough to allow socks without cutting off the circulation. Wear wool socks. Add booties to your shoes to keep moisture out.

  6. Step 6

Wear fleece-lined tights on your legs. Choose tights that are high-waisted or bib tights to keep your back covered when bent over.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear more layers in extremely cold weather or with a high wind chill factor.
  • Wear a bandanna or thin scarf over your face in place of a balaclava.
  • Choose a jacket that is both windproof and waterproof.
