Step 1
Start your shopping early. The closer it gets to the holiday, the more prices skyrocket. Turkey and other Thanksgiving items usually go on sale a month or two before the holiday. Pick up any items that will keep until you need them.
-
Step 2
Sign up for a supermarket club card. Many supermarkets offer a promotion that allows its club members to get a free turkey for Thanksgiving if you spend a certain amount during a promotional period.
-
Step 3
Write out your recipes. In order to buy only what you need, take your recipes with you to the grocery store. This stops you from buying unnecessary food items or too large a quantity of an item.
-
Step 4
Clip coupons. Take along any coupons that you can use for your Thanksgiving food purchases.
-
Step 5
Make items instead of buying pre-made foods. For example, instead of buying a pumpkin pie already made, opt to make a simple pumpkin pie from scratch. It will taste better and cost you less.
-
Step 6
Ask guests to bring dishes. Instead of you putting out all the money for groceries, request that your guests bring along food items to help complete the meal.
