Cold sores are also known as fever blisters. They are caused by a virus called herpes simplex and can affect anyone. In fact, almost everyone in their lifetime will have at least one episode of cold sores. These sores are very contagious and can be uncomfortable and unsightly. Here are some ways to relieve and treat cold sores.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Keep the cold sores area clean and dry.
Step2
Wash your hands with soap and warm water and keep them clean at all times.
Step3
Avoid touching, squeezing or pinching your cold sores as doing these can cause an infection and prolong the time to heal. Cold sores are also very contagious and can easily spread to other parts of the body such as the nose and eyes if not careful.
Step4
Take over-the-counter pain killers such as acetaminophen to relieve pain.
Step5
Use a cold or warm compress on the area of the cold sores to relieve swelling and discomfort.
Step6
Apply a zinc based ointment that can be purchased at any drug store on the cold sores. Zinc helps to speed up the healing process.
Step7
Stay out of the sun. The ultraviolet rays from the sun can aggravate the cold sores and may cause new ones to appear. Use a sunscreen to protect the skin when out in the sun.
Step8
Exercise and sweat it out. Sweating removes toxins from the body.
Step9
Get sufficient sleep. Fatigue can stress the body and slow down the healing process.
Step10
Eat a healthy diet including lots of vegetables. Research shows that broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts contain a certain type of minerals that can prevent the spread of the cold sore virus.
Step11
Drink plenty of water.
Step12
Allow the cold sores to heal within seven to 10 days. If condition does not heal or worsens, seek a doctor's advice.
