The great thing about decoupage is that it takes skills we learned back in kindergarten. If you can cut and paste paper, you can make these decoupage magnets. They are made with materials that allow the flexibility of designing them to fit any color scheme or decorating theme.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Glass half marbles
  • Paper
  • Glass cleaner
  • Lint free cloth
  • Decoupage medium
  • Paintbrushes
  • Scissors
  • Magnet
  • Epoxy
  1. Step 1

Purchase some clear glass half marbles at a craft store and clean the flat surface with glass cleaner and a lint free cloth.

  2. Step 2

Cut 2 byx 2 inch pieces of paper that contain the images or colors you want to use for your magnet. Use gift wrapping paper, napkins, greeting cards or make your own artwork.

  3. Step 3

Apply a thin even coat of decoupage medium to the flat surface of a marble and place it flat side down on the center of one of the paper squares. Lift up the marble with the paper attached and squeeze them together to help distribute the decoupage medium.

  4. Step 4

Repeat this process for all the marbles and let them dry completely before proceeding.

  5. Step 5

Use sharp scissors to trim away the excess paper from the marble. Make a close cut slightly under the outer edge of the glass so that no paper extends over the edge.

  6. Step 6

Paint a thin topcoat of decoupage medium over the back of the paper and allow to dry completely.

  7. Step 7

Glue a magnet to the paper backed glass with a few drops of epoxy and hold them together until the epoxy forms a bond. Once dry, the magnet is ready for use.

Tips & Warnings
  • When selecting a design to cut out, the thinner the paper the better. If you use cardstock, peel away some of the layers to make the piece easier to work with.
  • When selecting marbles, the bigger the better. Avoid those with cracks or scratches for a more appealing magnet.
  • The decoupage medium can be any number of adhesives such as wallpaper paste, wood glue or white glue.
