How to Troubleshoot Ghosting on a TV

Perhaps you've seen that annoying second picture on a TV screen floating around interfering with a TV show. You can see just a slight hint of another show superimposed on to the show you are watching. It is called ghosting, where a second show, blurry as it may be, appears on the wrong channel. Digital signals have helped stop the frequency of these unwanted screen invaders, but they still are a pain on the eyes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Turn off all stereo equipment connect to the TV and any VCRs that may be attached. An analog video signal comes through AM stations, so interference can be coming from any electrical devices that have a sound to them. VCRs left on are often culprit of ghosting.
Step2
Check and tighten all connections into and out from the TV, cable box, VCR, DVD player and stereo. Sometimes a loose cable is all it takes to make a ghost effect on the TV screen. Make certain the cable connections you are tightening, are in the correct spot.
Step3
Try connecting the cable connection from the wall directly to the TV, bypassing any boxes and other video and audio equipment. If this stops the ghosting effect, reconnect the cables to each device one at a time. You should be able to find the device that is causing the ghosting.
Step4
Buy more powerful antennae with the capability to block mixed signals. Rabbit ears and other types of these antennae aren't as easy to find anymore, but electronic stores still carry a small selection.
Step5
Wait a few days to buy anything new. Call your local cable or satellite company and ask neighbors to see if other people are having the same problems. It could be problems with the weather, solar flares or other anomaly that will pass.
