New Mexico is one of many states that utilizes the draw to determine who gets to hunt. The purpose of the draw is partly to assure New Mexico residents at least 78 percent of the permits. The earlier you make application for a drawing number, the more your chances improve for being selected.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Outfitter
  • Carcass tag
  • Permit
  • Hunting License
  • Raffle ticket
Step1
Get familiar with the difference in procedures for hunting deer in New Mexico and in hunting other big game. For a deer hunt, you must have a deer permit and a license. In addition, a carcass tag along with a habitat management and access validation is required.
Step2
Hunt deer on public land, if you are successful in the drawing for a deer permit. Hunting on private land is allowed only with the landowner's written permission.
Step3
Hunt only during legislated hunting season. Poaching or hunting a trophy animal out of season or in excess of your game limit can result in heavy fines.
Step4
Select an outfitter to plan and oversee your hunting expedition. Outfitters are required to make sure the hunt goes forward according to all the rules and regulations set forth in New Mexico for the various kinds of game. This is especially helpful for non-residents who may be unfamiliar with the territory.
Step5
Hire an agent to oversee the hunting operations on your land. If you're a landowner, an agent can relieve you from the responsibilities that go with setting up a hunting excursion on your property.
Step6
Take your trophy to an official measurer for the Boone and Crockett Club's Records program. Locations are listed on the New Mexico State website (see Resources below).
Step7
Purchase a raffle ticket for a chance to hunt bighorn sheep in New Mexico. The purchase information is on the New Mexico Wildlife website (see Resources below).
Step8
Find handicapped license information and applications as well as special permit applications on the New Mexico Wildlife website as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Outfitters or guides must submit their applications to any New Mexico Game and Fish Area Office by January 15 to be included in the pool draw.
  • The only hunts that are legal for a doe are the Youth-only hunts in New Mexico.
