Only 6 states in the United States allow public hunts for buffalo: Montana, Alaska, Arizona, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. Most of these states offer only a limited number of licenses and tags for hunting bison, and you must enter a lottery to get one. In Arizona, for instance, a lottery winner is issued an "once-in-a-lifetime" tag. You are allowed to harvest only one buffalo in your lifetime. Another option is to book a guided buffalo hunt on a private ranch. A few states require no license.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Snowmobile
  • Bullets
  • Camouflage clothing
  • High-powered rifle
  • Hiking boots
  1. Step 1

Condition yourself for a physically demanding hunt.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a high velocity, high-powered rifle if you don't already have one. Bison are very big and hard to kill.

  3. Step 3

Select a bullet that will penetrate, and not ricochet off of, the bison's thick, tough hide. You will need at least 20 rounds of ammunition.

  4. Step 4

Practice your shooting skills using the rifle you plan to take on your hunt.

  5. Step 5

Wear camouflage clothing in colors that match the terrain you will be hunting on. Hiking boots are a necessity.

  6. Step 6

Aim at 1 of 4 areas, the bison's brain, shoulder, lungs or heart. The lung shot is considered the easiest and will not cause harm to the meat.

  7. Step 7

Hunt Bison in Alberta, Canada. This is one of the few places where you can hunt wild, free-ranging buffalo. Tracking is by snowmobile and on foot.

  8. Step 8

Book a guided-hunting trip. These trips are usually all-inclusive packages, including meals, a guide, field dressing and the head and hide of your buffalo. The meat is not always included in the price.

Tips & Warnings
  • No license is required to hunt bison in North Dakota. Go there if you wish to hunt without paperwork.
  • Some states require that buffalo hunters attend an orientation session if they wish to apply for licenses to hunt bison. Hunters must learn the history of the bison, understand the hunter's responsibility for wildlife management, know the difference between bulls, cows and calves, understand proper shot placement and learn proper field-dressing techniques.
