-
1
Draw two perfect circles that are about 16 inches in diameter on a piece of fabric.
-
2
Cut out the two fabric circles.
-
3
Sew the right side of the circles together (inside out) all the way around, but leave a four-inch gap.
-
4
Turn the hat right-side out. Sew all the way around the hat about one inch from the edge. Leave the gap open.
-
5
Take a length of 1/2-inch wide elastic and thread it through the gap in the fabric all the way around inside the seam. It is helpful to fasten a safety pin to the end of the elastic and slowly pull it through.
-
6
Try on your beret and fix the length of the elastic so it fits your head comfortably. Tie the elastic in a knot and cut off the extra elastic.
-
7
Stitch up the gap in your beret by hand.
-
8
Embellish your new hat with rhinestones, beads, embroidery, patches or anything else you can dream up.

Tips & Warnings
To make the beret bigger or smaller, simply cut your circles larger or smaller.
To draw perfect circles use a piece of string and a pencil or find a big pot or bowl that is the desired diameter.
Make different berets out of different kinds of fabric. A velvet beret is a fancy hat, while a cotton beret is great for a summer day.

These instructions are not good. First you must cut a circle from the second circle to have a opening for you to place it on your head. So the inside or smaller part of the second circle must be a few inches smaller, so you can place it on your head. Only sew the outer edges of the two circles together right sides together and then hem the bottom edge toward the wrong side of course and then that is where you leave an opening for the elastic, use the round corded elastic. Or if no elastic, you can put a band on it. But the band has to measure your head size or the circumference of where your hat will be worn on your head. Well, it is easy if you want a casual hat, if you want it perfect it takes a bit to know your head size and once you get a pattern.... KEEP IT. -

I tried to make a beret for my son using these instructions. It did not work. When you pull the edges of a circle in they bunch up. To make this I think the edge should be the size of the head. I tried this on multiple circles sizes and the edge is too big while the amount of fabric in the center is not enough. -
