How to Check Available Hard Drive Space

Before installing a new program on a computer, you must know how much hard drive space is available. Don't let that new DVD sit gathering dust because you don't know how to check the available hard drive space on your machine. Just follow these steps.

Difficulty: Easy

1. Click on "Start" in the lower left-hand corner of the computer's desktop screen. Then select "My Computer" from the menu.
2. Perform a right mouse click on the "Local Disk (C:)" icon located in the Hard Disk Drives section.
3. Select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.
4. Look for the area on the form that has the "Used space" and "Free space" labels. This represents the amount of space that is used and that amount that is free on the hard disk drive.
5. Tap "OK" to close the form. Close the "My Computer" window.

Tips & Warnings

• You should know how much free space is available on the hard drive or drives in the system before purchasing programs. If there isn't enough space, you won't be able to install the program. Some programs have two different requirements for hard disk space; one for when the program is being installed and another for after installation. Make sure there is enough space to accommodate the larger requirement.
