How to be emo

In today's popular culture, being emo is just as cool as being a beatnik was in the 1960s. Emo culture revolves around music, knowing your emotional landscape and not being afraid to flaunt it, not to mention having great hair. The following are a few steps to get you emo.

Instructions

    • 1

Get in touch with your emotions. Emo is short for emotional, so whatever your emotions may be get in touch with them via song, art, poetry or photography.

    • 2

Research emo bands. There are hundreds of emo bands out there. Emo music ranges from soft like Dashboard Confessional to hardcore like Atreyu.

    • 3

Invest in a new emo wardrobe. Emo gear consist of skinny jeans, studded belts, converse tennis shoes or skate shoes and a good, tight hoodie.

    • 4

Cut and style your hair in a new way. Emo hair usually consists of contrasting colors such as blond and black bangs or something similar. The keys are having contrasting lengths and covering one eye with long bangs.

    • 5

Go to a show or concert. Find out where the newest emo bands are playing. Usually there is a popular hangout where emo kids congregate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Style your hair yourself. Emo kids often do their own hair to express themselves.

  • Create as much as possible according to your moods. Being emo means being in tune with your emotions, so make sure that you stay moody and creatively ripe.
