Imagine walking out to your car on a hot day and noticing that your rearview mirror is no longer on the windshield. Driving without a rearview mirror is dangerous and you may end up having to pay a fine if you get pulled over. But don't worry, attaching a rearview mirror doesn't have to be a hassle!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rearview mirror attachment kit
  • Felt pen or masking tape
  • Razor blade
  • Wrench or screwdriver
  • Rubbing alcohol
  1. Step 1

Buy a rearview mirror installation kit. They can be found in any auto parts store.

  2. Step 2

Park your car in a place where the temperature is between 50 and 75 degrees. The adhesive will not set as strongly on glass that is too hot.

  3. Step 3

Remove the metal button from the rearview mirror, using your wrench or screwdriver. Newer cars usually don't have mirrors that glue directly to the glass. Instead, you will glue the button directly to the glass and then attach the rearview mirror to the button.

  4. Step 4

Use the razor blade to scrape off the excess glue from the windshield.

  5. Step 5

Mark where the button goes with a felt pen or masking tape on the OUTSIDE of the windshield. That way, you can see exactly where to place the button.

  6. Step 6

Open the adhesive from your rearview mirror attachment kit. You may need to use the razor blade to open the vial of adhesive. Squeeze an ample drop of adhesive onto the button. Press the button on the glass, aiming for the spot you marked in Step 5. Hold the button in place for one minute.

  7. Step 7

Wait 30 minutes and reattach the rearview mirror to the button.

Tips & Warnings
  • Before you begin, make sure there is no moisture on the glass where you'll be attaching the rearview mirror.
  • You can also use rubbing alcohol to remove glue from both the button and the windshield.
  • Once you've removed the button, mark which side is up so you don't accidentally attach the rearview mirror upside down.
