How to Create a Calendar Using Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher allows a user a large variety of desktop publishing templates. Among the most useful is a designable calendar that can be formatted as basic or customizable based on your needs. This advice will apply to Publisher 2003, but all versions of Publisher have calendars and are very similar. Don't worry if you have an older edition (2000, for example); you can still create a calendar following these easy steps.

1. Open Microsoft Publisher. In the left-hand column, select "Publications for Print." Scroll down and click on the option for "Calendar."
2. Decide on a calendar size. Some versions of Publisher will only offer 1 size, while newer editions offer full-page or wallet-sized calendars. Click on your choice, and a variety of options will appear on the screen.
3. Choose a pre-set design. For a more straightforward look, select a design that has large boxes and easy-to-read dates. Select a more eclectic calendar if you are looking for less detail and more design.
4. Personalize the calendar. After you have chosen a design, the Microsoft Publisher calendar wizard will begin. Depending on the design you choose, a window may pop up and ask you for personal information to auto-fill into the calendar. This is an optional step and will not affect the design, layout or intended use of the calendar. Click "OK" or "Cancel."
5. Customize the calendar. On the left-hand side of the screen, you will see a number of calendar options. Click on "Color Schemes" or "Font Schemes" if you like the overall layout of the calendar but hate the colors and lettering. Choose "landscape" if you want a horizontal calendar or "portrait" if you prefer a vertical one. Publisher calendars are available in monthly or yearly format.
6. Add events to your calendar by clicking on the box specific to that date. For example, if you have a birthday party on the 9th, click on the 9 and the mouse will place the cursor in the box with the 9 so you can enter the event.
7. Save your calendar by going to "File" and selecting "Save" or "Save As." A window will pop up and ask you to name your calendar. You will also have to decide where to save it on your computer. Save it to the desktop or My Documents for easy access. Do this by clicking on the "Desktop" or "My Documents" button on the left-hand side of the pop-up window.

Tips & Warnings

• Clicking on "Change date range" or "Change dates" under the Calendar Options will allow you to pick your own calendar dates.
• Use the F9 key on your computer to zoom in on your calendar. Hit the key again to zoom back out.
• Always save your work. While Microsoft Publisher will save the template and design of your calendar, it will not save specific events. You have to do it yourself.
