Instructions

  1. Use Appropriate Apparel for Street Luging

    • 1

Locate a hard plastic helmet in order to compete in street luge races. Street luge helmets are essentially sleeker versions of motorcycle helmets, with a clear visor. You should try on helmets to determine the adjustability of the chin guard.

    • 2

Purchase goggles or glasses that are comfortable for use during street luging. Goggles are available at most sporting goods stores and provide a basic level of eye protection in case your helmet cracks. Some riders dress with sun glasses to keep the sun out of their eyes while riding.

    • 3

Find a leather racing suit at a specialty provider before you ride your street luge. Leather racing suits protect your body from oncoming debris while maintaining the smooth surface needed for a streamlined ride. You can look among your local provider's inventory for racing suits with Kevlar lining for maximum protection.

    • 4

Buy oversized leather gloves to complete your street luging uniform. Leather gloves provide a good deal of protection for your hands when you paddle the luge at the beginning of the race. You should purchase gloves a size larger than necessary and use a thin pair of work gloves for additional comfort.

    • 5

Test out different athletic shoes when you are practicing street luging. Some street lugers use skate shoes because the soles are designed to stand the stresses of riding on a skateboard. Sprinting shoes are a good choice for you at the beginning of your luging career because they have small spikes that give you good traction at both ends of the course.

    • 6

Wear a thin layer of clothing under your racing suit to stay cool. T-shirts and gym shorts are common choices to avoid excessive sweat collecting on the inside of your suit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Maintain the condition and cleanliness of your street luging attire to improve performance. Your luge suit, shoes and gloves need to be in perfect condition in order to avoid excessive wind drag. Accumulations of dirt and debris on your helmet or luging suit can also slow you down on the track.

Please don't do any of the things in this article. As a street luge rider and builder I found this article to be misleading to the point of dangerous. 1. Helmets don't have "adjustable chin guards." Luge style "wedge" helmets allow the wearer to see down the length of the body when lying flat. 2.If your helmet cracks, glasses or goggles won't be helping you. DOT rated helmets are designed to shatter in certain ways to dissipate the forces of an impact. They are not to be used after a significant impact either. With attainable speeds in excess of 60mph, you will need a very good helmet with a DOT and or Snell rating. 3. "Leathers" are for more the looks and "streamlining" Leathers are worn by professional racers because of their abrasion protection. If you wipe out at 40+, you don't want to be wearing your favorite Corona tnak top and shorts. Leathers will save your skin. It s
