How to Uninstall Mac OS Panther

Mac OS Panther does not have the kind of "uninstall" routine that Windows has always had. Some users think the manual deletion, upgrading or overwriting process on the Mac is more straightforward and transparent to the user, while others would like a dedicated uninstall utility. There is no indication that Apple will ever include such a tool in its OS (Operating System).

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac OS installer DVD, whether older or newer than Panther 10.3
  • Second drive, external or internal, in addition to the startup disk

Uninstall Panther After Booting From Installer DVD

  1. Step 1

Choose "Restart" from the "Apple" menu and insert the Mac OS Panther installer DVD right away, or insert the DVD and "Restart" while holding down the "C" key on the keyboard.

  2. Step 2

Select the "DiskUtility" application from the menu bar.

  3. Step 3

Run "DiskUtility" and format the drive, effectively destroying all data and preparing the drive for later installation. Alternatively, you can start the installation routine and choose "Upgrade" or "Archive and Install" if you are ready to install another OS.

  4. Step 4

Consult a good all-around Mac reference site such as MacGurus if you encounter problems or get hard-to-decipher "Error" messages at any time during this procedure (see Resources below).

  5. Uninstall Panther After Booting From Another Hard Drive

  6. Step 1

Start up from another internal drive or a Firewire external drive that has a valid OS installed on it.

  7. Step 2

Locate the "DiskUtility" application in the "Utilities" folder (within the "Applications" folder) and launch it.

  8. Step 3

Select the drive from which you want to remove Mac OS Panther in the left-hand pane, then select the "Erase" tab (center one of three right-window tabs).

  9. Step 4

Choose a formatting option from the drop-down menu, and click on "Erase" at bottom right.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never perform any kind of install or uninstall routine unless you have first safely backed up all of your data.
  • Although you can format the startup disk (thereby uninstalling Mac OS Panther) with "DiskUtility" after starting up from the installer DVD, you will more than likely want to install a newer or older OS. You can save a step by choosing the "Upgrade" option instead.
  • You will not be able to format the startup disk or delete (uninstall) Mac OS Panther unless you start up from a different drive or an installation DVD.
  • If you want to start up from an external drive, it must be a Firewire drive with a valid system installed. The Mac OS does not support starting up from external USB drives.
