Things You'll Need:
- Mac OS Panther installation DVD
- Mac hardware that meets the minimum requirements
-
Step 1
Ensure that your Mac is capable of running Mac OS Panther by checking Apple's upgrade requirements (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Back up all of your important data. In a regular, problem-free OS installation, none of your non-system data should be altered or erased, but be prepared for the unexpected by backing up.
-
Step 3
Check to see if your peripherals are compatible by consulting the Apple Device Compatibility Chart (see Resources below).
-
Step 4
Make sure your older G3 doesn't need a firmware upgrade by consulting the Apple Firmware Upgrade Chart (see Resources below).
-
Step 1
Shut down your Mac and all peripherals, and disconnect any non-Apple devices from your computer before restarting.
-
Step 2
Start up your Mac and make sure no other applications are active so that you can run "DiskUtility" (to ensure there are no drive problems that will prevent a smooth installation). This application is located in the "Utilities" folder, which is in the "Applications" folder.
-
Step 3
Insert the installation DVD and start the upgrade process by opening the DVD icon and double-clicking on the "Install" icon. The installer application will cue you when the Mac needs to be restarted. This is required for the installer program to finish its work.
-
Step 1
Follow the instructions on the screen, and choose one of the two upgrade methods: "Upgrade" will install the new system resources and leave your files and preferences alone, while "Archive and Install" will place existing system files in a folder named "Previous System" and install Mac OS Panther. Either way you can retain user and networking settings, as well as import multiple user profiles and associated "Home" directories.
-
Step 2
Restart your Mac after the process is complete. If you opted for "Archive and Install," you can now customize the installation by manually copying any preference files or user settings from the "Previous System" folder to the same location(s) in the new system. Most of these items will be found in the old "Preferences" and "Application Support" folders (located in the old "Library" folders in "Previous System").
