How to Play Four Corners

Kids love playing Four Corners because they get to run and act goofy with their friends without requiring much skill or strategy. Teachers love the game because it helps expel excessive energy and the rules are easy to remember. Next time your students are bouncing off the walls, take them to the gym for a few minutes of Four Corners.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick someone to be "it." This person stands at the front of the gym or playing area with her back to the group.

    • 2

Designate 4 corners and number them 1, 2, 3 and 4. Make sure the class knows the number of each corner.

    • 3

Start the kids at the center of the 4 corners. Blow a whistle for them to run to a corner. If you are inside and have access to a CD Player, play music while the kids run to the corner of their choice. When the music stops, they must pick a corner and stay there. If you don't have access to music, count backwards from 5. When you get to 1, they must pick their corner.

    • 4

Pick a corner. The "it" person, without looking, picks a number.

    • 5

Eliminate the players in the corner that was called out. These players sit down in the middle, where they started.

    • 6

Turn the music back on or call out for them to pick a new corner. Let them run around until you stop the music or give them a 5-second warning. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until only one player is left. This person is "it" next.
