A onesie is a one piece outfit for a baby that snaps at the crotch. The snaps make it easy to change a diaper, which is one reason the onesie is among the most popular baby items of the day. Decorating a onesie can be an easy way to make a gift for a baby. You can even use decorating onesies as entertainment for a baby shower.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Onesie
  • Cardboard
  • Fabric paint
  • Brushes
  • Sponges
  • Fabric markers
  1. Step 1

Purchase a onesie. You can purchase a single onesie or a package of onesies from any store that carries baby supplies. Get a onesie that is plain with no design or writing.

  2. Step 2

Wash the onesie. Either handwash or machine wash the onesie and allow it to dry. Use a baby safe detergent that is chemical and scent free to avoid causing any allergic reactions.

  3. Step 3

Stabilize the outfit. Cut a rectangular piece of cardboard 8 inches wide and 16 inches long. You need to adjust the size of the cardboard for larger onesies. Stretch the onesie over the cardboard. The onesie should be tight with little give.

  4. Step 4

Choose your design. Just about anything is cute on a baby. Pick out an expression, a wish or a picture. Plan the spacing for writing before you start decorating.

  5. Step 5

Decorate the fabric. Now that you have a design in mind, you paint or draw the design onto the onesie using fabric paint or markers. Use the sponges for a textured look.

  6. Step 6

Dry the onesie. You can allow the onesie to air dry or you can use a blow dryer to dry the paint. If you want to decorate the back, turn the onesie over once the paint is completely dry.

  7. Step 7

Remove the onesie from the cardboard once you have finished decorating the onesie and it is dry on both sides.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may not need brushes or sponges if you buy pen-like fabric paint.
  • You may want to buy stencils to use while decorating.
