Government bonds are federal debt obligations. Investors purchase these "debts" that will be paid back to them over time with interest. They are relatively safe investments and offer a good hedge against market fluctuations. You can buy these bonds by following these steps.

From Quick Guide: Finance Jobs
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact your financial advisor and get advice about where to purchase government bonds.

  2. Step 2

Visit your local bank and inquire about the purchase of government bonds if you do not have a financial advisor.

  3. Step 3

Schedule an appointment with a brokerage firm who deals in government bonds and buy from them directly.

  4. Step 4

Call the United States Treasury for specific information about Government Savings Bonds. Government Savings Bonds are different than regular government bonds and must be purchased directly from the Treasury Department.

  5. Step 5

Request a list of sole underwriter investment firms from the Treasury Department. The government can choose individual firms to do this and in those cases the bonds would only be available from them.

  6. Step 6

Visit the United States Department of Treasury website for a current listing of bonds available for purchase.
