How to Install a DVD-ROM Drive

Older computer systems were delivered with a CD-ROM drive, and many users have decided to upgrade to a newer DVD-ROM drive to handle larger files. Often, the existing CD-ROM drive can be removed, or the new DVD-ROM drive can be placed into an empty drive bay and two drives can be used to handle most needs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shut down the system, unplug the power cord and remove the side panel or panels from the case.

  2. Step 2

Ensure that the new DVD-ROM drive is set to be "Slave" or "Master," depending on if it is a replacement or an additional drive.

  3. Step 3

Locate the empty drive bay for the new DVD-ROM drive, and remove the drive bay covering.

  4. Step 4

Insert the new DVD-ROM drive into the empty bay and secure with screws or other attaching device provided by the manufacturer.

  5. Step 5

Connect the open connector on the ribbon cable to the new DVD-ROM drive and connect the power supply cable to the drive.

  6. Step 6

Replace the side panel or panels, plug in the power cord and turn the system on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ensure that no part of the ribbon cable is twisted more than absolutely necessary, as this can cause operational problems.
  • Ribbon cables and power cables can normally only be inserted one way on a DVD-ROM drive. If any resistance is felt, do not force the cable. Examine and determine the problem, then fix before proceeding with the installation of the new DVD-ROM drive in the system.
