A child's ears are delicate and need to be protected. Whether you take your child to a monster truck rally or an Air Force air show, you can protect our kids' ears now so they can hear in the future.

From Quick Guide: Hearing Protection 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk with the child about the dangers of loud noises. Let them know that not even the people on the runway or down in the pit at a monster truck show leave their ears unprotected. Those people are wearing some sort of protection because the loud noises are dangerous.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a pair of ear plugs. Ear plugs can be especially helpful for older children. You won't lose the ones that are on a string or head piece as easily as the individual ear plugs. These can be purchased in the medicine aisle of a grocery store, at a drug store, and sometimes at outdoorsman stores.

  3. Step 3

Buy a pair of ear muffs. Ear muffs look like a good set of headphones but do the opposite of headphones by stopping or blocking the sound. People often use the ear muffs in construction work. They can be purchased inexpensively at Home Depot.

  4. Step 4

Wear ear protection yourself. Don't let it be a "do as I say not as I do" situation. You are the best role model for your child's actions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy the ear protection before you go to a loud event because you will pay double if you buy ear protection sold there.
