In 2005 the USDA estimated there were 12.4 million hungry children due to poverty. Hunger in children is especially disturbing because it disrupts their ability to learn. You can feed hungry children in your area by following these steps.

Educate yourself about the problem. Find out how hungry children suffer. Research the effects of malnutrition on a child's growth and development. America's Second Harvest site can get you started..

Pass that knowledge on to your community. Talk to local organizations that serve hungry children and write an opinion column in your local paper about it. Organize a group where you educate family, friends and neighbors about the problem and brainstorm ways to help.

Donate to charities that feed hungry children. You can do a search on Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program's website to find organizations that help people in need. Select the "Funded Organizations" button and look for your state and county.

Offer to help at a soup kitchen or food pantry. You'll get to see these children and talk to their families. Feed the Children is an international organization that can guide you in helping hungry children in your area.

Bolster community support to feed hungry children. Starting with your employer, encourage local businesses, schools, religious institutions and social groups to sponsor and carry out fundraising events. Feed the Children's site has a list of successful fundraising activities you can choose.

Tips & Warnings
Invite kids who get subsidized school lunches to dinner or for a meal on the weekend. They may not get a hot meal except when they're at school.
Don't forget that not all hungry children live on the street. Be aware of any neighborhood kids who look like they're struggling with poverty.
