Microsoft Access database files can be easy to manipulate. But networking the files, especially large ones, is not so easy. Making them secure also raises issues. With the right tools, it is possible to convert your Access files to MySQL database files. MySQL is an open source website that provides online, secure accessibility to your database files no matter what size they are.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sign up for a MySQL account. Download the program onto your computer.

  2. Step 2

Back up all your Access files. You should always back up any files before working on them.

  3. Step 3

Download the ODBC driver, and install it. The driver can be found on the MySQL website. Click on "Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Data Sources (ODBC)." Click "Add" under the "User DSN" tab. Select "MySQL ODBC Driver," then click "Finish." Click "Test Data Source," click "OK," then click "OK" again. If you get an error message saying "Unable to Connect," temporarily disable any firewalls that may be running.

  4. Step 4

Try a free converter such as DBTools. You can find many free converters online. Each converter will have different directions, but the DBTools converter will be used in this example. First turn on DAO. Launch DBTools. You will get a message that there is no server profile. Select "Options," select "Preferences," and select "DAO 3.6." Quit DBTools and restart it.

  5. Step 5

Connect to MySQL. Once connected use the "Import Data" wizard to connect to the Access database you wish to convert. Select "Access97" regardless of Access version. Click "OK" and the wizard should complete the import and conversion process for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are not comfortable with converting large files, it may be a wise to invest in a converter. Free converters have limitations. You'll save time and money in the long run.
  • MySQL is open source. The program is constantly being improved, so you'll want to stay current on any updates to the program.
